Education is the foundation of development. Nations that achieve self-sufficiency and sustainable growth almost always credit strong, continuous education systems as their backbone. A robust education system reduces poverty and crime, improves healthcare and life expectancy, and creates equal opportunities by equipping people with the skills needed for a thriving workforce.
Yet, in Nigeria, this reality is far from reach. Despite the promise of free education, the country has over 20 million out-of-school children, the third-highest number in the world, according to UNESCO. These figures are alarming, and the consequences are far-reaching.
At Rise to Inspire Africa Initiative, we see education not only as a right but as a lifeline. We have made it our mandate to complement government and partner efforts by supporting vulnerable and out-of-school children, especially those affected by crises. We recognize that in emergencies, education is often one of the first casualties, leaving children and youth vulnerable and without a pathway to stability and growth.
