At Rise to Inspire Africa Initiative, we work to safeguard the safety, dignity, and human rights of Nigerians living through poverty, natural disasters, and armed conflict.
Nigeria—the most populous country in Africa—has long struggled with political instability and economic inequality. Today, communities in the Northeast and other crisis-hit areas are facing displacement, hunger, and disease outbreaks on a staggering scale. Families are leaving their homes in search of safety, while poverty and climate shocks deepen their suffering.
Despite the country’s vast oil wealth, nearly two-thirds of Nigerians live in poverty, with the North and Northeast bearing the heaviest burden. Drought, flooding, food insecurity, and epidemic diseases now affect over 13.5 million people, leaving millions of children and families in desperate need of support.
At RIA Initiative, our mission is clear: to provide displaced Nigerians and vulnerable host communities with access to healthcare, nutrition, education, sanitation, and protection services.
Nigeria’s humanitarian crisis is among the most complex in the world. Key challenges include:
Extreme Poverty: More than 50% of Nigerians live below the poverty line, despite being one of Africa’s largest oil producers.
Food Insecurity: In Northeast Nigeria alone, over 3.8 million people struggle to access food, with hunger now at emergency levels.
Displacement: Nearly 2 million people have been forced to flee their homes, with only 8% living in official camps supported by the government.
Destroyed Infrastructure: Conflict has left 66% of health facilities in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe non-functional.
Children at Risk: Orphaned, unaccompanied, or separated children face heightened risks of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
Gender-Based Violence: Women and girls continue to suffer sexual abuse, forced marriage, and trafficking.
Underfunded Response: Humanitarian aid falls far short of meeting needs, leaving millions unreached.
The COVID-19 pandemic worsened these conditions, overwhelming health facilities, stripping families of livelihoods, and pushing vulnerable households deeper into crisis.
Since 2020, RIA Initiative has been on the ground in Yola and Maiduguri, responding to emergencies and helping families rebuild their lives. In just a few years, we have:
Supported over 5,000 people whose livelihoods were destroyed by conflict.
Launched Education in Emergencies programs in 2021, providing access to learning, temporary classrooms, and protective services for children.
Delivered life-saving aid including food, water, sanitation facilities, and hygiene kits to thousands of displaced families.
Our programs focus on both immediate relief and long-term resilience. Key interventions include:
Constructing water supply systems and sanitation facilities for displaced populations.
Collaborating with local health providers to strengthen water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
Distributing mosquito nets and essential household supplies.
Establishing safe spaces where children can play, learn, and recover a sense of normalcy.
Providing literacy and numeracy classes to displaced children.
Offering psychosocial and medical support for mothers and children who have experienced violence.
Assisting displaced families in Borno, Adamawa, and Yobe to rebuild their lives.
The crisis is far from over. Millions remain without adequate food, shelter, education, or protection. Malnutrition continues to claim children’s lives. Women and girls are disproportionately exploited, and too many families are left without hope.
At RIA Initiative, we know that humanitarian aid alone is not enough. Our long-term goal is to strengthen economic security for women and children, helping families not only survive crises but also build sustainable livelihoods for the future.
Relief today, resilience tomorrow—that is our guiding vision.
Together with partners and communities, we are determined to build a future where every Nigerian child grows up safe, healthy, and full of hope.
In a region where humanitarian needs are vast and urgent, choosing the right partner matters. At Rise to Inspire Africa Initiative, we stand out because of how we work and who we serve.
